Enrichment Programs

Cornerstone School understands the importance of the arts in early childhood education. We have experts in their field both on staff and offering programs on site to ensure our students receive an educational experience that addresses all learning domains. Research proves the natural connection between STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) and the arts. During active learning critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity promote these connections.

Through our Core Enrichment programs of Music and Art along with the many Elective Enrichment programs offered Cornerstone Students have the opportunity to experience the arts and technology during their school day.

Core Enrichment - Music

Kids Music Progam
Music class is held every Friday. Each class attends a 30 minute music class with our on-staff instructor, Stephen Agnew.

Music Classes at Cornerstone School

Children learn music in much the same way they learn language. Infants and toddlers learn to speak by listening and “playing” with language long before they learn any formal rules of language. Similarly, young children need ample time to “play” with the “language” of music before beginning any formal musical training. This is the purpose of Mr. Agnew’s music classes at Cornerstone School. Through research-based musical play within a song-based curriculum, children develop a strong foundation in the musical skills they will later need to be successful in formal music instruction.

 • Rather than simply talking about music, music is continually experienced through live performance.

 • Children are encouraged to approach music as active "doers" rather than as passive "consumers".

 • Children are exposed to engaging music from around the world in a variety of meters and tonalities.

 • Children are introduced to a variety of instruments: guitar, piano, ukelele, accordion, and an assortment of percussion instruments.

 Foundations Music Classes

 • The focus is primarily on developing listening skills to expand the children’s musical vocabularies, the children are encouraged to join in making music to any extent they are comfortable.

 • Children experience and respond to musical opposites: loud/soft, high/low, short/long, and fast/slow.

 • Children learn appropriate ways to respond to live music.

 Preschool Music Classes

• Children learn appropriate responses for various styles of music.

 • Children use voices, instruments, and movement to explore pitch, tempo, dynamics, and musical duration.

 • Children practice naming and classifying musical instruments.

 • Children develop skill in keeping a steady beat at various tempos through movement and instrumental activities.

 • Children develop their listening skills through imitating rhythm and tonal patterns in various meters and tonalities.

 Kindergarten Music Classes

• Children expand their musical vocabularies through rhythm and tonal solfege exercises.

 • Children begin to read and write musical notation and practice translating musical sounds into written notation.

 • Children experiment with creating music through improvising rhythm patterns, tonal patterns, and songs.

Why art is important for early childhood development

Posted on January 22, 2015 by Kylie Rymanowicz, Michigan State University Extension

“Children are naturally curious. From the minute they gain control of their limbs, they work to put themselves out into the world to see how it all works. They explore, observe and imitate, trying to figure out how things operate and how to control themselves and their environments. This unrestricted exploration helps children form connections in their brain, it helps them learn—and it’s also fun.

Art is a natural activity to support this free play in children. The freedom to manipulate different materials in an organic and unstructured way allows for exploration and experimentation. These artistic endeavors and self-directed explorations are not only fun, but educational as well. Art allows youth to practices a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life, but also for learning.

Skills youth practice when participating in art activities include:
  • Fine motor skills. Grasping pencils, crayons, chalk and paintbrushes helps children develop their fine motor muscles. This development will help your child with writing, buttoning a coat and other tasks that require controlled movements.
  • Cognitive development. Art can help children learn and practice skills like patterning and cause and effect. (i.e., “If I push very hard with a crayon the color is darker.”). They can also practice critical thinking skills by making a mental plan or picture of what they intend to create and following through on their plan.
  • Math skills. Children can learn, create and begin to understand the concept of size, shape, making comparisons, counting and spatial reasoning.
  • Language skills. As children describe and share their artwork, as well as their process, they develop language skills. You can encourage this development by actively listening and asking open-ended questions in return. It is also a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary words regarding their project (i.e., texture).

In addition to helping youth develop important skills, free expression is also good for overall health and well-being. Giving your child a creative outlet can help relieve stress and work through things happening in their lives. By encouraging artistic expression, you can help facilitate learning.

Art Class Objective

To create a fun, creative environment where a child can learn, grow and explore with confidence, at their own pace and with their own unique expression. Through teaching art fundamentals I look to broaden a child’s understanding of basic art concepts enhancing their creative experience within classroom. The children get to explore their creativity through a variety of projects that offer a lot of creative freedom. Throughout the year their artwork is displayed around the school creating a stimulating visual environment culminating with our Annual Art Show where several selected pieces are exhibited.

Elective Enrichment

Elective Enrichment Programs are not being offered for the 2020-2021 School Year at this time.

preschool science programs
One of the advantages of having your student attend Cornerstone School is the ability to enroll them in one or several of the enrichment programs offered at the school. Registration and fees for these programs are separate from Cornerstone tuition and are paid directly to the program provider. The programs are designed and offered by area experts in their fields. Classes begin at 1:00 pm so a student who is dismissed at that time can be brought directly to class by a staff member and parents can pick up when the class is over. Those students who spend a longer day at Cornerstone will be brought back to class by a staff member. Classes begin in the Fall once our students are settled in their classroom routines. Little Actors Studio is for student 4 yrs. and up. All other classes are 3 yrs. and up. Classes hold 10 students, multiple sessions can be offered if enrollment warrants.

Enrollment information will be distributed once school has started.

  • Conversation blooms as we sing songs about food, and discuss likes and dislikes

  • Familiar big-book stories in simple Spanish are told with puppets and props

Kindermotion® is a developmentally designed Education through Motor Skills, Physical Development, Fitness, Nutrition, and Imagery Program that prepares students minds and bodies for athletic and academic pursuits.  Kindermotion® also strengthens children's communication and leadership abilities in boys and girls.  The program focuses on the Mind/Body Connection while building self-esteem and self-confidence in young children.

This program will help children attain their true potential socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively.  Kindermotion® teaches to all of the children's senses.  Since children learn in a variety of different ways, teaching to the total child is accomplished by engaging all of their senses, which stimulates the central nervous system and ensures a successful learning and growth experience.

Little Actors Studio will be held on Fridays. Children have incredibly fertile, creative imaginations, and love to pretend. In Little Actors Studio class we build on this, and have fun playing theater games, role playing, improve, storytelling and bringing stories to life. Students must be 4 for this class.
